NOURISH USA
Empowering Communities and Supporting Conservation
through Nourish Eco Village in South Africa

NOURISH ECO VILLAGE SOUTH AFRICA
Nourish (South Africa) was created in 2011 as a platform linking conservation with community issues and ideals, finding integrated sustainable solutions to issues plaguing conservation such as wildlife crime, poverty, low levels of education and food insecurity.
Nourish’s focus is to connect communities to conservation through education, enterprise and tourism. This targets the key problems in the region, of poverty and poaching.
With a deep-rooted understanding, stemming from years of hands-on experience with local
rural communities suffering the effects of poverty, we built the Nourish Eco Village to provide an alternative. An opportunity for community members to access learning, skills training, and
income-generating opportunities that allow them the choice of a different path. One that will inevitably lead to them willingly protecting and contributing to their environments in a positive way, because simply, their most basic needs are taken care of.
We hope to create change where it matters most - in the minds of the young people and communities who will determine the future of our planet.
THE CHALLENGE
Sustained underdevelopment and unemployment remain the key challenges facing the rural wildlife villages adjacent to the Kruger National Park. These situations of rural poverty are not simply isolated circumstances of material deprivation but are perpetual situations of dis-empowerment.
The conservation area of the Kruger National Park and the surrounding private nature reserves have issues just as big as those that lie in the communities. Poaching/illegal killing of wildlife has become a daily threat to conservation with rhino poaching, as well as lion, elephant, pangolin, and vulture. Animals are being killed for their horns, hide, bones or skins in an effort to generate income to support their families.
NOURISH USA

WHY
Nourish USA was started to support the ongoing efforts of Nourish in South Africa - whose Eco Village has been impacting hundreds of people and thousands of children over the last 11 years.

HOW
We do this through using our network to create exposure, highlight the important work Nourish is doing, and provide a platform for fundraising support, engaging donors and hosting events.
